Report generator: from Excel to automation

How a calculation logic originally built in Excel was turned into an automated tool able to produce the same reports in a few clicks. A look back at a project that saved time, reduced errors, and freed teams from repetitive report preparation.

A report that takes hours to prepare every month... sound familiar?

It usually starts the same way: a well-built spreadsheet, a few formulas, some copy-pasting between sources. It works, but it depends on one person, it takes time, and a single input error can throw the whole report off.

We did it: a report generator that turned hours of manual prep into a few clicks, by industrializing a logic that was originally built in Excel.

In practice, the calculation logic that already existed (the rules, the indicators, the report structure) wasn't thrown away. It was carried over and turned into an automated tool, connected directly to the data, able to produce the same reports in a few clicks with no manual work involved.

What that changes, beyond the time saved:

→ Fewer errors, since the calculations no longer depend on a manual step

→ Reliable, repeatable output, no matter who triggers the report

→ A team that spends less time preparing the numbers, and more time analyzing them

→ A centralized logic, easier to evolve as needs change

What we take away from this kind of project: automation rarely starts from scratch. Often, the best foundation is already there, in a file or a method that already works, it just needs to be structured and industrialized to become reliable at scale.

And you, is there a recurring report or task in your team that still runs on a "homemade" file?
